My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting the Miles Wine Cellars mileswinecellars.com on our vacation in the Finger Lakes region in New York State.
It is a short drive off the main road but it is so worth it. The Greek revival mansion dates back to the early 1800’s and overlooks Seneca Lake. The home and the grounds are stunning.
As you walk through the front door you immediately sense the history of the mansion and soon learn of its haunted past. The person that led us through our tastings was very knowledgeable on the history of the area and the home as well as the wine and beer selections.
I decided on a white flight while Mark chose a beer flight and it was all delicious but the hands down winner for us both was the Cache Sparkling Riesling! Anyone that knows me knows that I am a red wine girl but this quickly opened up my mind and my palette. I could have sat by the water and sipped this most of the afternoon. Oh wait, that really happened! As we were getting ready to leave the tasting room Mark asked if we could walk down to the water and check out the road that had been used to reach the ferry. He was intrigued by the stories we heard of the residents of the home charging tolls to passing cars and that they were part of the Underground Railroad. She encouraged us to explore and informed us that the boat house was open and we could purchase wine there and relax! Wait! What?
As we strolled down the old road towards Seneca Lake we all but stopped in our tracks when we saw the boat house. I knew our plans were about to change and so our wine trail map was put to rest as we looked at each other and smiled.
We were greeted by a friendly bartender asking us if we would like a cookie and a refreshment. We declined the cookie but accepted the refreshment and of course it was a glass of Cache. As we sat on the dock in the sun we thought the day just couldn’t get much better. As we settled in and took some pictures we started talking with the bartender which turned out to be Evan Miles, third generation wine maker.
Evan was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the winery and its history and so open about discussing his future goals that it was very easy to let time slip away. Our conversation turned to pizza once he discovered we were from Chicago. As we sipped on our second glass of wine we discussed our travels and the many great food options near the winery. With rain and thunder rolling in and with all the talk of food we realized we needed to grab some lunch. We said good-bye and promised we would be back again.
As I have said in previous posts one of the reasons my life is bad ass is because I get to connect with people on my adventures. I loved the wine at Miles Wine Cellars but more than that it was the entire experience of that afternoon spent in the tasting room and at the boat house that will bring me back again and again.
I highly recommend making the time to experience it when you are in the area. You will not be disappointed.
Have you been to Miles Wine Cellars? Let me know about your experiences and which wine was your favorite.
Cheers!
